בהקדמה מציין המחבר את סיפרו של
לוצטו, משה חיים (לוודא שזהו הכתיב הנכון של מחבר זה) - לישרים תהלה, מורה נבוכים לרמב"ם, תנ"כ, ספר משלי שועלים לר' ברכיה הנקדן, ואת ספר תחכמוני (ככל הנראה, סיפרו של אלחריזי, יהודה בן שלמה). הוא מבקר את העיבודים החדשים לספרי המשל שמעוותים לעיתים את כוונת המקור, וגם משלבים משלים שאין להם לקח מוסרי כלל. המחבר טוען שכתב את הספר לטובתם של הילדים. הוא בחר במשלים מובחרים, ואותם עיבד. בשל הקושי הכלכלי להוציא את הספר, הוא חילק אותו שני חלקים - חלק שני, שיהיה גדול יותר, הוא יוציא אם החלק הראשון יצליח.
